Synesthesia is the condition where some people hear sounds as color. For me it’s a combination of shape, color, pattern, and movement. As an attempt to create this visual/musical experience for viewers I started using color lighting as a medium. I’ve been experimenting with LED color light strips that respond to sound. Changing color with the music, I discovered a love for optics, and a way to bring movement to my paintings. By creating paintings that have a light box construction, the LED light inside effects the different painted surfaces of the light box. The painted panel behind the light receives the most dynamic changes of color while the painted plexi-glass attached to the front holds the light in and has moderate color changes to the elements painted on it. By using vivid light effects I feel I’m fusing together sound and visual imagery in a new and exciting way.
